ADHD Therapy for Children in Bethesda, MD
Does your child struggle to focus, sit still, or follow through?
Understanding ADHD in Children
ADHD is one of the most common challenges we work with at Little Minds Therapy, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Children with ADHD aren’t lazy, unmotivated, or defiant. Their brains are wired differently, and in a world built around sitting still, staying focused, and waiting your turn, that difference can create real struggles.
At Little Minds Therapy in Bethesda, MD, we specialize in helping children ages 4-12 with ADHD build the skills they need to succeed, at home, at school, and in their relationships. Our approach is compassionate, play-based, and built around each child’s unique strengths and challenges. We work with families across the DC Metro area, including Chevy Chase, Rockville, and Potomac.
ADHD in children can look very different from child to child. Some kids are constantly on the go and seem unable to slow down. Others daydream, lose focus easily, and have a hard time completing tasks. Many children have a combination of both. Common signs include difficulty sustaining attention on tasks that aren’t highly interesting, losing things constantly, acting before thinking, having a hard time waiting or taking turns, struggling to follow multi-step directions, and feeling easily overwhelmed or frustrated when tasks require sustained effort.
How We Help Children with ADHD
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to ADHD. We take the time to understand your child's specific profile and build a treatment plan that addresses their individual needs.
Building Self-Awareness
Many children with ADHD don't fully understand why they struggle in certain situations. We help children develop self-awareness about how their brain works, what their personal triggers and patterns are, and what strategies are most effective for them. This understanding is incredibly empowering.
Developing Focus and Attention Skills
We teach practical strategies to help children sustain attention, organize their thoughts, and manage tasks more effectively. This includes breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual tools and routines, and building in strategies for redirecting attention when the mind wanders.
Building Impulse Control
Impulsivity is one of the hallmarks of ADHD, and it affects everything from classroom behavior to friendships to family dynamics. We work with children on the pause-and-think skills that help them make more deliberate choices rather than just reacting.
Emotional Regulation
Children with ADHD often experience emotions more intensely and have a harder time managing them. We help children identify their emotions, understand the connection between their feelings and their behavior, and develop healthier ways to cope with frustration, disappointment, and overwhelm.
Building Social Skills
ADHD can make the social world particularly challenging. Children may interrupt, talk over others, miss social cues, or struggle to take turns in conversation and play. We work on these skills directly in a supportive, low-pressure environment where children can practice before trying them in the real world.
Strengthening Executive Function
Executive function skills like planning, organizing, starting tasks, and managing time are areas where many children with ADHD need direct support. We work on these skills in practical, concrete ways that translate to real improvements in daily life.
Is This Your Child?
You might be in the right place if your child has a hard time staying focused on tasks that aren’t highly engaging, seems to be constantly moving or fidgeting, acts before thinking and then seems surprised by the outcome, loses things regularly and has a hard time keeping track of belongings, struggles to complete tasks or follow multi-step directions, or has received feedback from school that they are distracted, impulsive, or having a hard time keeping up.
If any of this resonates, we’d love to talk. ADHD is very treatable, and children who get the right support make meaningful, lasting progress.
