SPACE Treatment for Parents

When a child struggles with anxiety or OCD, everyday moments can feel overwhelming for the whole family. Many parents describe feeling stuck in a cycle of avoiding triggers, offering constant reassurance, or adjusting routines just to help their child get through the day. SPACE Treatment offers a clear, research-supported way to help.

What Is SPACE Treatment

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence based, parent only treatment developed at the Yale Child Study Center. Instead of working directly with your child, SPACE focuses on giving you the tools to reduce anxiety-maintaining patterns at home.

SPACE is effective for:
• Childhood anxiety disorders
• Obsessive compulsive disorder
• School refusal
• Separation anxiety
• Fears and phobias
• Social anxiety
• Perfectionism and rigid routines

Why SPACE Works

Most parents naturally “accommodate” anxiety by offering reassurance, avoiding feared situations, or stepping in to prevent distress. These responses make sense, but they can unintentionally keep anxiety going.

SPACE helps you shift toward supportive responses that communicate:

• I understand this is hard.
• I believe you can handle it.

This balance reduces anxiety and builds confidence over time.
